2nd week of dasvidaniya :)

I receive quite a few sms s on my phone from fellow actors, directors or producers asking me to see their film or tv show or watch their plays .. and not all times i remember or even bother .. i take it easy .. very casually .. at times forgetting how important it is for them ..or how close it is to their heart s ..

today i feel on the otherside .. i normally never ask people to see my show or a film .. unless its family or some very very dear freinds of mine .. dasvidaniya released .. the buzz is that its a wonderful film ..and i really dont need to sell it to anyone .. but i find it difficult to accept that some people who matter to me ..fail to understand ..what it would mean to me ,them watching my film that am so passionate about ..not only bcoz i am in it ..but bcoz its a good film.. i really want everyone that i know, to watch ..can u believe it , my involvement in dasvidaniya .. is not more than an actor ,that too in just a few scenes.. but still ..i feel strongly about it

Maybe its human tendency , too much self involvement that dosent make u look beyond ur own convenience your own fayda :) am not pointing any fingers .. coz i havent seen a lot of work of my own friends .. i was too involved in self ... it never occurred to me that ..if i called a friend of mine whose film had just released ..he would have loved to hear from me about his film/tv show .. expecting feedback ..but mustve felt disappointed , if dint even mention the movie /show .. just did general chit chat and hung up :) am going thru that :) anyone who calls me on the phone .. i expect ..wouldve seen the film and so has called .. at times the call is about .. 'can i have so and so s number ' or ' pls sms ur address gotta send something ' etc .. but i gotta understand dasvidaniya is my world not everone elses

I cant help but think of my college years . where i was trying to make extra bucks by selling good quality cosmetic products .. oriflame .. it is just not easy to sell it to people ..who are brain washed by the posters and ads of lakme .. they would know that oriflame was good quality .. but would spend as much or more on foreign cosmetics ..but not oriflame .. coz they were looking at whats gauravs gain in it .. obviously i wanted to make money .. but in return i was giving them the best .. orflame sold well later .. not thru banners or posters but thru recommendations

Now before u think the example is too bizzare .. lemme relate it for u :) lakme bombarded with marketing ..i would say was dostana .. oriflame would be dasvidaniya .. am not saying lakme is bad .. but am saying it is so much in ur face ..it is so much fed in our minds thru ads posters banners .. that the first name that comes to u while buying toiletries and cosmetics is lakme ..also it is available ..almost at every shop .. dasvidaniya i would say is an appointment film .. not too many shows like dostana .. but sailing smooth and steady thru word of mouth .. recommendations

I quit oriflame .. but i wont quit dasvidaniya .. i will keep recommending it to all .. its important for me as a cinema lover to be offered good films to watch .. if i want dostana i also should be given a film like dasvidaniya as a viewer .. such films should be made .. why am i given foreign locales .. heros heroines dancing with 3o dancers in the back ground in most films .. its fun to watch .. but how much can i take .. am glad the trend is changing ..and smaller soulful films are being made and doing well too :)

now coming back to where i started .. :) if someone messages me to watch their film /tv show .. i will make an extra effort to watch it .. and i surely will let them know if i liked it

White doll :)

We were at Dasvidaniya promotions .. talking about the film .. somewhere in the distance i spotted this doll with the perfect light falling on it .. i went close to look at it .. and realised it wasnt a doll :) .. look carefully .. its a tiffin lunch box .. kept in a corner .. in a knotted polythene :) purbi clicked a better pic of it than i did .. so i have to give credit to her for the pic .. coz she insisted that i give her credit on my blog :) but i spotted okkk :P .. isnt it awesome what we percieve from a distance can actually be something totally different from what it appears to be .. :) lets call it "tiffin doll ":)

Lala pishori lal / lala kamarnath

Ive been running a community on orkut called "lala pishori lal " it has about 300 members .. most know what lal pishori lal is all about .. those who dont know .. lemme tell you again :) we play games .. under various topics .. topics as bizzare as " hindi kahawaton ka angrezi anuwaad" ookty , anahat, iqra , lohit akshi ,benit , rahul , binal have been very very regular .. ( lemme know if am missing some names .. i can always add ) ...guy i hope u know we are not just killing time .. we are being creative.. this is also what theatre games are all about too .. let ur mind run wild .. at times i use what u guys say in my work .. and u are very very funny :) rahul with his creative writing .. can go any level of being bizzare hahhaha :) i crack up when i read the posts .. and am thankful to u guys for never being crass or vulgar or cheap .. its a family community yaar ;) thx guys
Its funny.. at times when i go out .. some few people call me Lala ( including my friends ).. and for someone who dosent know lala .. its really weird ( coz i think i dont look that old ) :P .. so am giving basic introduction of Lala pishori lal again :) .. ok .. Lala pishpori lal .. was a character i played for the great indian comedy show ..on star one .. i was an ex cricket .. gone cookoo in the head .. and still believed .. sunil gavaskar was responsible for sabotaging my career as a cricketer .. :) and i teamed up with suresh menon who played srikant ..a lovely co actor .. its was the two of us giving expert comments on cricket .. mostly non sense .. :) check out the two videos ive put in orkut .. or you could do search on you tube too .. my get up was of a very .. old man (almost 200 yrs old lol ).. whose tongue comes out hanging while talking .. suresh is naturally funny and our writer arshad sayyed ( who also wrote dasvidaniya ) did fantastic job everytime with the scripts :)
When the show was on .. id go to a party .. people would wag their tongues to me .. like Lala .. almost like instead of saying a hello .. lol .. but was fun .. at times i would wonder .. how do they know me ?.. when the getup was quite loud .. and u cantt really make out that it was gaurav gera playing lala pishorilal .. how did they know .. maybe i underestimated the viewers :) they are too smart these days .. many dont know that i based the character on my relative uncle ji ... i spoke like him .. loud punjabi man .. lil hard of hearing .. am not taking names .. or my family would hate me for that :)) lol .. i always used to look forward to playing Lala
Originally the character was called lala kamarnath .. and since no one wanted to get into a controversy .. the name was changed to lala pishorilal .. it was really tough to take out that husky voice ..flem filled old voice .. i would cough non stop after the shoot :) but the adulation i got .. kept me going .. i clearly feel that was one of the best charachters i played till yet .. arshad sayyed saying that was the best thing he saw on Tv ever .. was a huge compliment at the wrap up party of the show .. felt great
Am running the community .. coz i wanna bring lala back .. maybe on the net on tv or a film ..I wouldnt mind producing a show .. i dunno how .. but i want him back .. i wanna freak out with lala much more .. and am sure the members of " lala pishori lal " would want that too .. it took two hours to do the make up ..even the eyes lashes were painted white .. but i dint mind .. i loved playing lala .. even if it took 4 hours .. wouldnt matter :)) yes one of the few acts ive done am quite proud of .. now when its off air .. i entertain my friends with funny quotes from lala .. or a rondevous with lala .. the non sense goes on .. i loooooooooooove non sense :)

My director shashant shah ( who also directs dasvidaniya ) had total faith in me .. the first day i was supposed to play lala .. it was totally left to me ..as to how i want to play it .. am glad he let me play it .. coz i had most fun ..shooting it ..:) i wish i had some dvds of the series .. i wouldve put it up here .. if any of you guys have it .. plsss give it to me .. or Ill have to play the character again( which id love to lol) .. do keep playing games on the community .. and ill get him back somehow :)

GOA :)

Daily soaps

A lot of times people ask about my take on daily soaps .. ive tried to put my views across via media .. but it seems they dont get what i am saying .. it is still portrayed as if .. i hate daily soaps and look down upon on them .. thats not the case really .. i think we tv actors are able to deliver at times much better than film actors .. its coz of the means we tv actors work in ..at times the script is given just before the scene is shot .. to memorise the lines and be able to emote is quite a task .. same goes for technichians too .. if u compare .. films produce 2 1/2 hrs in a few months and tv daily produces 22 mins into 16 episodes a month = 5.8 hrs .. so, tv really know hows to work in the time frame and the budgets

u gotta put some questions , some logic aside.. coz .. in tv the top priority is the dead line .. not the story, not the performance, not the taking .. they gotta keep the people hooked on ..there are religious followers of these daily soaps .. the reach is vast .. especially now when the world is a smaller place .. tv soaps are hugely popular .. i first witnessed that when me and mona were called to india day parade in new jersey .. we were put on top of a float ..and we waved at people on both sides of the road for about 3 kms .. it was quite an eye opener .. and trust me mona is a huge star and crowd puller like many other tv leading ladies ..infact their star power is bigger than a lot of film stars ( am not talking about the real big ones ) its all thanks to tv ..

am not talking about the reality shows ..but fiction tv .. films are start to finish ..they know what they wanna make and when they are sure they start filming .. tv is beyond imagination ,u start a flow and then u gotta keep it exciting forever ..u gotta deliver trps every single day ..i respect ms kapoor for that ..at a young age she is already a legend .. she has already set an example for many young kids .. making a show run for 8 yrs is not a joke .. its talent, hard work and creativity .. i think the majority knows ms kapoor ..and balaji .. and they cant be taken lightly and ignored .. clearly they are the biggest ..a great achievement

its a high pressure job .. for the producers the actors and technicians and all involved .. coz of this high pressure at times seaps in bitterness or frustration ..in every department .. but u cant let it affect ur show .. u mustve read stories ..about producers not paying, troubling actors ..or co actors not be able to stand each other ..or channel and producer at war.. or actors fainting at sets ..but all is kept aside to make a good show .. the channel, the producer, the actors, the technicians, the unit ..they all work in harmony towards making a show superhit.. its not easy u work long long hours

I at times wonder why cant seasons happen on indian tv .. where u take a break .. work on ur script ur plot .. and return to shoot happily .. i at times try to reach the bottom that causes problem .. and a lot boils down to money ..you can be patient if it was a few days commitment u do over look a few problems .. but daily soap means putting ur life on hold working almost 30 days .. it becomes ur life .. i myself co operate much more with situations when am getting paid well .. the problem is .. new commers are paid really less .. they gotta wait one year for their contract to be renewed and money to increase .. during that one year they become huge stars .. they realise the problem when people expect u to live in a certain life style .. and they cant afford it .. they get bitter ( am not talking about all ) and so they give problems to their superiors .. its a cycle a chain reaction ..

I usually like to work where there is a fear of losing the job .. be it the role or money .. something that i have a fear of not being able to get again .. a hit show does set u for life .. i owe everything to jassi jaisi koi nahi .. if it wasnt appreciated the way it was .. i would still be trying to get noticed .. i owe it all to jassi ..the daily soap .. and nothing can match a daily soap ..not a weekly not bi weekly .. its a daily soap that attracts most viewers .. when crores are spent on film stars to make an appearence in a show .. why cant that money be spent on ur core cast ..who in turn will not do more than one show to make ends meet .. so no dates problems .. (here again am not talking about all ) .. ull be able to make a good quality show ..have a happy environmet to shoot .. why wait one year that ur cast becomes huge stars .. and turn monsters for u .. its a daily soap .. u needs to work together daily .. u see the same faces again and again for years .. u end up becoming like a family .. so why cant that be done happily ..

this is an actors point of view .. i would love to hear other point of views .. maybe i need to change my thinking about this ..maybe u bring in a point which i never looked at .. :) in the end ill say its not easy running a daily soap .. a lot goes into it .. to provide good quality entertainment to the viewers .. who.. ultimately is the BOSS :)

Acting /modelling for dummies :)

All right here i go .. its not rocket science :) .. i know how it feels when u r in a small town .. nobody around u is in this field ur parents dont consider it a career and u feel lost .. u pick up newspaper .. and see shady small ads saying actor /models required .. and wonder if these ads are genuine .. a lot of people have asked me how to go about it on orkut .. if u are decent looking ur frns and ur family coax u into it (chane ke jhaad pe chadha dete hai ) .. well acting and modelling is not only for stunners but people of all ages shapes and sizes are required .. hope this infornmation is helpful

Training :-i would say observe ur self .. if u have a desire to act .. u mustve done something in school or college or ur colony related to drama .. these things help .. infact any kind of training .. be it some acting school or a theatre group .. Its important to know where u stand .. u must listen to people what they think about ur performance or how u could improve .. surround urself with encouraging positive people ur well wishers opinion matters most .. at times u might think u are brilliant .. but maybe thats not what others think :) .. Go according to what u can afford .. if its not affordable dont go to expensive acting schools do theatre with some local group

Portfolio :- a set of pictures is a must .. its like ur visiting card .. so that when casting is happening they can pick up pictures and take a look at what u look like .. what age group, height etc .. whether u fit in a character or not .. so a good portfolio is important .. here again if u dont have money and u cant spend thousands .. ask ur friend to click pics of u..approach someone who has a good camera.. go to a professional when u can afford .. the other way of doing it is request a known photographer.. promise him that ull pay later .. or model for him free when he needs .. but if he says No ..pls take a no as a no!! its a small industry and u deal with same people again and again .. and u dont wanna be on ignore list

Co ordinators :- U need co ordinators/agents to get u work .. ur reach can be 5 offices .. but the cords. who have been in this line for ages have more contacts and a wider reach .. they work on commission basis .. ranging from 20% -30% .. u need them .. they can put in a word for u too ..u can go directly to production houses to drop pics email or courier ur pics too .. id say dont leave any stone unturned .. do all :) buy a film directory wihch has numbers of all production houses and co ordinators ..

Auditioning :- even if u are related to someone important all depends on ur audition .. common they cant risk crores of rupees just becoz u r someones relative .. be real .. u ll get calls for auditions based on ur pics .. when they call ..they audition you on camera .. they give u lines and they tape u .. they are not taping you just like that .. some bigg people who cant be physically present at the audition watch the tape in their offices .. u get shortlisted on that basis .. so dont shy away from auditions and do give loads .. auditions also polish your skills and u can learn a lot from other actors/models who audition with u .. also u make a lot of contacts .. and build relations .. remember the more people know you exist .. the better it is :)

Be Nice & be liked :- there are thousands of aspirants .. u gotta be nice .. u are dealing with creative people and they are bound to have big egos .. afterall you need them more than they need u !! be dedicated .. be prepared .. they are senior people they know the job much better than u .. if u wanna give a suggestion give it tactfully without hurting their ego .. they are not ur parents that u come late to shoot ,you dont deliver what they want and still be nice to u .. be professional .. they can either speak highly of u and work with u again and again .. or just black list u

Patience :- it might happen that u get ur portfolio in order and do the acting course and dont even recieve call for an audition .. have patience my dear :) things dont happen overnight .. make use of ur time .. meet more people from this industry .. watch plays ,watch movies , if u like to workout go to the gym ..be prepared for the call when it comes .. remember , if u keep sitting at home .. u are staying away from all possibilities .. go out .. the more people u meet the more u know about who is casting .. and whats the buzz better for u .. so be social .. its all about networking .. simply if i see someone more often than you .. and if someone asks me for a recommendation .. his name is more likely to come to my mind than urs ..

I know of some cases where they say that they wanna run away from home to come to mumbai to act .. here i think u dont need to run away .. u must take ur parents into confidence .. ull need them again and again .. u gotta make them understand .. trust me even if u are doing theatre for free without making any money .. shows ur dedication ..and ur parents can see ur dedication and desire .. theyll support you .. :) media is booming and lots of work happening .. but remember there is a huge number of aspirants reaching here everyday so competition is tuff .. not really that easy too .. i know businessmen doctors engineers CA s who have left their jobs and got into acting coz it attracts .. do finish ur studies that way ur parents will also feel better .. afterall u are their responsibility :) Good luck guys .. hope this helps

siwadekap .. sounds like swadikhaa .. hello in thai

hahhah .. adding glamour to the blog .. i was in bangkok for a film shoot .. well this memory i carried from there :) the left side was 2500 bhats and right 2000 bhats .. guess cheaper moves faster :)

Being an actor .

'Being an actor' feels great its a creatve field u get fame and lotsa money .. But!! yes its not as secure as you want it to be .. the good part of it is .. if u are famous u dont really need an introduction .. people are nice to you .. and they wanna know more about ur life .. like how are the other actors .. parties and lotsa gossip ..they are really keen on knowing how much money you make .. what ur lifestyle like etc

When i started .. I hated the word struggler for me .. coz i felt its not a struggle .. its just a journey from where i was .. to where i wanna be and thats all .. it never felt like a struggle too .. when i travelled by public transport .. or had to give lotsa auditions or had to wait long hours without being given any preference .. of course i was no star kid and i wasnt the best looker :) but was confident and had faith in myself and yes parents having faith in you is also very important .. u need them .. u need their support and well wishes

when u are young and just starting.. you think once u get a break all will be rosy .. nope thats not the case .. even if u get a brilliant break ur success is measured by how u doing right 'now' .. we have seen a lot of cases .. lots of actors become overnight stars .. and few months/years later ..no one even talks about them .. i just feel its as 'good' or as 'bad' as any other field .. all depends on how well u doing right 'now' .. definitely the glamour attached to it is bigg :) and exciting

once ur show or ur film is out .. if its a big hit .. ur second project is easier to get .. you get better money and roles to choose from .. but all depends on how ur last tv show/film fared .. and then once the second show or film is out all depends on how that fares .. so its all about 'now' .. its 'now' who u are ... 'now' where u stand and 'now' what are u doing ..its like any freelancing job .. This feild attracts more attention and more eyeballs .. people openly critise u or judge ur performance .. u gotta be ready for it .. being judged :) and everyone gives u an opinion .. u ask for it or not

i took a big risk .. leaving my job shifting to theatre .. and moving to mumbai .. without knowing where and how to go about it .. i was lucky , thankfully media was booming .. so i dint have to sleep on any footpath :) people around me praised my guts and vision to be able to move to mumbai ..be self made .. but am also aware if i hadnt done well for myself .. they would call me a fool .. to have quit a job and make this stupid move .. so again .. its all about 'now' .. i dunno about future .. how i would do? .. better or maybe be down in the dumps .. you never know .. but am glad i followed my heart and did what i felt i could do .. there is nothing better than having proud parents and friends :)

my journey .. to where i want to be.. has not ended .. i wanna go far far away .. wanna go down in the history .. via acting or not .. i dunno how .. but am going with the flow .. i do, what feels right .. i listen to all but i do what i gather ..[I hope am able to express myself thru my blog .. and hope this doesnt sound like random blabbering :) ]being an actor .. gives u a platform to express ur self .. u are interviewed more .. u speak ur mind more than others .. and people listen .. coz u r an actor .. u wouldnt read my blog if i wasnt an actor unless i was ur friend or family .. and am not still big league .. just imagine how many clicks must mr bachchan be getting on his blog .. people are dying to know about what hes doing right now .. so being an actor surely is a great kick .. its fun .. and if u love the work u r doing .. its icing on the cake.. a lot depends on how the audience likes it .. they could shatter u with their comments .. or praise u to no end .. but you are given attention this or that :)

people like to talk about you .. i have felt great in school when i used to boast about anil kappoor being my relative .. bahut door ka rishta hai .. but still he is " meri maami ki bua ke jaith ka ladka " my claim to fame in school .. hahahha i loved flaunting the relation .. am sure mr kapoor has no idea about our relation :) if i meet him .. i dont think ill try and explain the relation to him ..

there is a peoples way of looking at an actor too .. they expect u to be making a lot of money and live in style .. i remember .. some years back when i had a santro car and jassi was a huge hit .. i was at a crossing and this guy on a bicycle got really excited to see nandu .. he yelled "eh Nandu .. iss gaadi mai ?? " hahahha trust me i was so sure i dont wanna change my car .. but that cycle wala made me upgrade my car .. it dint matter to him that it cost me additional few lakhs :) .. people expect an actor to wear gucci .. armani and all designer brands

in the end ill say that this is a proffession which comes with a few hazzards and u must be ready to face them .. these things are not offending or troubling unless u make a big issue about them .. its a creative feild .. u get to meet a lot of new people .. u get to deal with different kinda situations .. u r given all eyes and ears .. and u get paid handsomely .. and people look upto u .. they wanna know u more ..and be u :)

a lot of people ask me how to go about being an actor .. so in my next post ill write about that .. hopefully that will help new hopefulls :) take care .. i am loving to blog .. lemme know if u liking it

write in :)

okkk .. so it appeared .. ) great .. the number of views is going up .. but since u all are not writing in .. i dunno if its for real .. do comment maybe just a ' hi '
